Have More Sex AFTER a Heart Attack?

Yearly, 805,000 people suffer a heart attack in the United States. One of the last things on anyone’s mind after this scare is sex. One study surprisingly shows that having sex after a heart attack is beneficial to your health.

Decades In The Making

The Israel Study of First Acute Myocardial Infarction chose to see if sex and heart attacks are connected. Researchers handpicked 500 sexually active patients, who had a heart attack between 1992 and 1993. 90% of the patients in this study were men with an average age of 53. To get a better understand of things, each patient reported their sexual activity before and after the heart attack.

The Shocking Results

22 years after the initial report, researchers want to get an update on these patients. Unfortunately, 43% of them passed away from undisclosed circumstances. When it came to the remaining patients, many of them managed to survive through various means. “Improved physical fitness, stronger spouse relations, and a mental ability to ‘bounce back’ from the initial shock of the event within a few months are among the possible explanations for the survival benefit observed among the maintained/increased group,” Professor Yariv Gerber said in a statement.

Scared To Start Again?

For some patients, getting back into sex can be difficult following a heart attack. “On the other hand, patients who perceive their health as poor might be less likely to start having sex again. They may also be less likely to adhere to cancer screening tests and other prevention practices during follow-up. This may explain the strong inverse association between resumption of sexual activity and cancer mortality that was seen in our study,” Professor Yariv Gerber also said in a statement.

Fortunately, those people can lower the risk of another heart attack by taking care of their health. The sex is just a bonus.
